Francis S. Coltrara

Francis S. Coltrara, 84, of Hickory, N.C., formerly of Pittsfield, died Dec. 11 at Shady Grove Rehabilitation Center in Rockville, Md.

Born in Pittsfield on Feb. 24, 1919, son of Salvatore and Fortunata Giardina Coltrara, he was a Pittsfield High School graduate.

He moved to Hickory in 1976.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Coltrara was employed as an engineer by GE for more than 40 years, including as a facilities manager with the distribution transformer division in Hickory. He was instrumental in the design and construction of distribution transformer manufacturing plants in Hickory, Shreveport, La., Mexico City and in Vietnam. He retired in 1982.

He was a communicant of St. Aloysius' Church in Hickory and enjoyed playing golf and bird watching.

His wife, the former Lillian Ferland, whom he married in 1942 in Pittsfield, died Aug. 9, 1999.

He leaves three sons, Michael Coltrara of Scottsdale, Ariz., David Coltrara of Oakland, Calif., and Steven Coltrara of New York City; a daughter, Judy Prassinos of Boyds, Md., and three grandchildren. Another son, Dennis Coltrara, is deceased.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Francis S. Coltrara, 84, died Dec. 11, 2003. At the time of his death, he was in the care of his daughter and sons. Services and interment will be held tomorrow, Dec. 17, at St. Aloysius' Church in Hickory, N.C.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Aloysius Building Fund, Route 127, Hickory, NC 28601. He also leaves two daughters-in-law, Susan of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Cari of New York City; a son-in-law, Peter Prassinos of Boyds, Md.; grandchildren, Alec, Nikolas and Callie; cousins, nieces and nephews.

He also was predeceased by a brother, Joseph, and a sister, Carmella Lombardi.
