Raymond E. Hand Jr

Raymond E. Hand Jr., 70, of 65 Columbus Ave. died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Pittsfield on April 27, 1933, son of Raymond E. Hand Sr. and Louise Breen Hand, he was educated in local schools.

He served in the Army National Guard.

A carpenter, Mr. Hand had been employed as a sexton at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church since 1984. He also was a sexton at First United Methodist Church and at Temple Anshe Amunim.

He also had worked for Borgnis Lumber for 22 years, and at the former A.H. Rice Silk Mill, the former England Brothers, GE and Berkshire Life Insurance Co.

He was a member of St. Stephen's Church and enjoyed woodworking, building models out of wood and gardening.

He and his wife, the former Jane E. Daniels, were married Aug. 21, 1954, in St. Stephen's Church.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Eugene R. "Butch" Hand of Woodstock, Ga.; three daughters, Cynthia L. Hand, Kathleen M. Hardy and Dawn Y. Ball, all of Pittsfield; a brother, Norman A. Hand of England, six granddaughters and three great-grandsons.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Raymond E. Hand Jr., 70, of Pittsfield, who died Dec. 13, 2003, will be conducted Wednesday at 11 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church by the Rev. James C. Dannals, rector. Burial will be at a later date in Cemetery of the Evergreens in New Lebanon, N.Y.

Calling hours will be tomorrow, Dec. 16, from 4 to 7 at DERY FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield. Mr. Hand also leaves six granddaughters, Chandra Cunningham, April Hand, Angel Maloney, Gina Hand-Salvi, Danielle Robillard and Shelsea Hand, as well as three great-grandsons, Kyle, Brian and Cameron. He was predeceased by a sister, Maria Hand, and, in 1987, by his granddaughter Carey Hand.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church or to the charity of one's choice in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
