Carolyn J. Tompkins, 87, formerly of Dalton, died Tuesday at Forestview Nursing Home in Wareham.
Born in Pittsfield on March 20, 1916, daughter of Carl and Hazel Holderness Cozzio, she was a graduate of Middlebury (Vt.) College.
She resided in Dalton for many years before moving to Wareham in 1997.
A homemaker, Mrs. Tompkins was active with a number of local clubs, including as a Welcome Wagon hostess in Dalton and Pittsfield for the Welcome Wagon for Newcomers Club.
She also was a life member and past president of the Pittsfield College Club, where she served three terms on the executive board.
She enjoyed knitting and collecting antiques.
Her husband, George B. Tompkins Jr., died Oct. 7, 1997.
She leaves two daughters, Judith Morse of Wareham and Susan Nichols of Basking Ridge, N.J., four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Carolyn J. Tompkins, who died Dec. 9, 2003, will be private. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Lenox. There will be no visiting hours. Arrangements are by SCOTT, CHAPMAN, COLE & GLEASON FUNERAL HOME, 2599 Cranberry Highway, Route 28, Wareham.
She also leaves a son-in-law, Walter Nichols; four grandchildren, Eric Schneck and Kristin Wade of Wareham; Michael Nichols of Dayton, Ohio, and Kathryn Nichols of Minneapolis, and two great-grandchildren.
