Richard Frederick Radke

Richard Frederick Radke, 78, of 28 Worthington St. died Monday at Holyoke Soldiers Home, Holyoke, where he had been a patient for one month.

Born in Sheffield on July 24, 1925, son of Ludwig and Bertha Fiebig Radke, he attended schools in Sheffield and Pittsfield, graduating from Pittsfield High School in 1943.

He had also lived in Lanesboro.

A Marine veteran of World War II, he served with the 9th Marine Air Wing Division.

He had been employed at GE for 32 years, retiring from the distribution transformer department as a winder in 1985.

He was a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners clubs and the Marine Corps League Pittsfield detachment.

Mr. Radke was also a member of the GEAA and helped build the indoor firing range there.

An avid gardener, he enjoyed nature and fishing.

He and his wife, the former Dorothy May Sidway, were married Oct. 12, 1946, at First Baptist Church in Pittsfield.

Besides his wife, he leaves four sons, Karl L. Radke of Lanesboro, Peter J. Radke of Easthampton and Raymond E. Radke and Paul R. Radke, both of Chicopee; a daughter, Linda S. Papirio of Belchertown, and eight grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Richard F. Radke, 78, who died Dec. 1, 2003, will be Friday at 11 at the DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., with the Rev. James C. Dannals, pastor of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery with full military honors.

Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society or to the Eagle Santa Toy Fund, both in care of the funeral home. Mr. Radke is also lovingly survived by his eight adored grandchildren, Anthony Papirio III, Michael Papirio, Cynthia, Marianne, Angelica, Daniel, Michelle and Alexander Radke.
