Valentino L. DiNicola

November 21, 2003

Valentino L. DiNicola, 80, of 89 Edward Ave. died Friday at home.

Born in Sambuceto, province of Chieti, Abruzzi, Italy, on Jan. 21, 1923, son of Adamo and Rosina DiNicola DiNicola, he came to Pittsfield as child and graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1941.

An Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, he served as a radio operator/ gunner, achieving the rank of technical sergeant. He flew on B-17s with the 8th Air Force in the European theater, including in the Normandy campaign. He received a theater ribbon with two bronze stars and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Mr. DiNicola was employed by GE in the power transformer department for 44 years, retiring in 1985.

He was a communicant of Mount Carmel Church and a member of its Holy Name Society. He was a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs, Sons of Italy Itam Lodge 564, VFW Post 448 and Father William Contino Post 75 Italian American War Veterans.

He was also a member of the 8th Air Force Historical Society of Savannah, Ga. He was a former member of the Wednesday Night Mount Carmel Church Bocce League.

He enjoyed golfing, bocce, bowling and traveling.

He and his wife, the former Angelina H. Chiachiarette, were married May 10, 1947, at Mount Carmel Church.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, David J. DiNicola of Scotia, N.Y., a brother, Alexander DiNicola of Pittsfield, and two grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Valentino L. DiNicola will be Tuesday, Nov. 25, at 9 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St., with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church by the Rev. Geoffrey J. Deeker, CSS, pastor.

Entombment will follow in St. Michael the Archangel Mausoleum in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Monday, Nov. 24, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. The Mount Carmel Church Ladies' Guild and Holy Name Society will meet Monday at 5:30 for a prayer service.

Sons of Italy Itam Lodge 564 will meet at 6 for a ritual service. Loving grandfather of Katherine and Laura DiNicola of Scotia. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Massachusetts chapter, in care of the funeral home.
