Ernest Spaulding "Spike" Sagalyn, 62, of 75 Laurel Lake Road died yesterday at home after a four-year battle with cancer.
A longtime insurance professional, he was also active in numerous local charities and civil groups.
Born in Springfield on July 21, 1941, son of Julian L. and Margaret Hayes Sagalyn, he was a graduate of Mount Hermon School and Colby College.
He served in the Coast Guard.
He was the owner of Ernest S. Sagalyn & Associates Inc. in Pittsfield. He was a chartered life underwriter and a registered health underwriter.
He was past president of the Massachusetts Association of Life Underwriters and the Berkshire County Life Underwriters Association. He was honored with the John P. Meehan Award, presented by the Massachusetts Association of Life Underwriters, for outstanding achievement and contributions.
Mr. Sagalyn was a member and fund-raiser for the Berkshire County chapter of the American Red Cross, the Berkshire chapter of the American Heart Association, the Pittsfield Boys and Girls Club's capital campaigns, the Lenox Library Association and Big Brothers-Big Sisters.
He was a member of the Friends of Tanglewood, a past board member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood, and a past trustee of the Berkshire Country Day School.
He and his wife, the former Jennifer Greaves, were married Dec. 29, 1966.
Besides his wife, he leaves his daughter, Rachel Sagalyn of Ghent, N.Y., a brother, Jeffrey B. Sagalyn of Wilbraham, and a sister, Patricia S. Hunter of Monroe, Conn.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The family of Ernest Spaulding "Spike" Sagalyn, who died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, will receive friends on Saturday, Nov. 22, from 4 to 7 at the DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, Dec. 13, at 1 at the Country Club of Pittsfield, 639 South St.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Berkshire County chapter of the American Red Cross in care of the funeral home. His greatest pride was his devotion to his daughter, who was a champion equestrian professional, and to her equestrian farm in Ghent.
