Francis Calvin Markham Sr., 76, of 128 Elmer Ave. died Tuesday evening at Hillcrest Commons, where he had resided for three years.
Born in Stockbridge on July 4, 1927, son of Florence Murphy Markham of Pittsfield and the late Franklin H. Markham, he attended schools in Great Barrington.
A veteran of World War II, he served 2 1/2 years in the Merchant Marine, then in the Army from 1946 to 1948. He spent 28 months of his service in the South Pacific.
Mr. Markham Sr. had been employed as a salesman for Richco of Springfield for 20 years, retiring in 1982.
Prior to this, he had worked for both Country Club Soda and Burke Beverage Co. as a salesman.
He was a member of VFW Post 448 and the Eagles of Northampton.
His wife, the former Theresa Langlois, whom he married June 17, 1950, died Jan. 26, 1998.
Besides his mother, he leaves three sons, Francis C. Markham Jr. of Dalton, Mark A. Markham and David D. Markham, both of Pittsfield; two daughters, Theresa M. Markham of Charleston, S.C., and Karen M. Roche of Pittsfield; a brother, Thomas Markham of Seattle; a sister, Theresa Ransior of Seattle; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Another son, Thomas J. Markham, died in 1964.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Francis Calvin Markham Sr., who died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003, will be conducted Friday, Nov. 14, at 11 at DERY FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Charles F. Young, chaplain of HospiceCare in the Berkshires.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be today from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors Inc. in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield.
Mr. Markham was predeceased by a brother, Daniel Markham. He leaves his eight grandchildren, Richard "Richie," Jason, Marianne, Theresa, David, Christian, Renee and Felicia, and five great-grandchildren.
