PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Elizabeth A. "Betsy" Roy, 43, of 120 1/2 Danforth Ave. died Saturday morning, Nov. 8, 2011, at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in North Adams on May 1, 1960, daughter of Elizabeth Hazel Casey Costa St. Hilaire of Pittsfield and the late Nicola Costa, she attended schools there and was a 1979 graduate of McCann Technical School. She also attended Berkshire Community College for two years.
Mrs. Roy had been employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier in Pittsfield for 16 years, until retiring in July because of ill health.
In 1998, she and her husband, Jack Roy Sr., created a haunted house for Halloween in their home as well as heading up the Pittsfield Police Department's Haunted House at the police station.
They continued their involvement with the police event, which was moved to the Onota Building in 1999, then to Lyman Street in 2001. In 2000, they were named Mr. and Mrs. Halloween by the Police Department.
This year, volunteers took up a collection and had billboards around the city dedicating the annual Haunted House to Mrs. Roy.
She was a member of the Reid Middle School Council and PTO, and was active with the Babe Ruth and minor leagues.
She and her husband celebrated their 24th anniversary Aug. 20.
Besides her mother and husband, she leaves two sons, Jack "JP" Roy Jr. and Jesse Roy, both of Pittsfield; two brothers, Nicola Costa Jr. of Ridgefield, Conn., and David Costa of North Adams; three sisters, Sandra Szczygiel of Prince Edward Island, Laurie Zacharias of Diamond Bar, Calif., and Michelle Oleski of Fair Lawn, N.J.; her stepfather, Vincent St. Hilaire, and nieces, nephews and cousins.
FUNERAL NOTICE — Calling hours for Mrs. Roy will be Tuesday from 4 to 8 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Jimmy Fund in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
