Abby Florence Brent, 89, of Upper St. Clair, Pa., died Wednesday at the Friendship Village, where she had resided since 1994.
She was a former executive director of the Berkshire County Chapter of the Red Cross in Pittsfield, retiring in 1976.
Born in Shinnston, W.Va., on April 21, 1914, daughter of George D. and Maybel Jaynes Brent, she was a graduate of Shinnston High School, Salem College and West Virginia University.
She taught for seven years at Shinnston High School.
In 1943, she joined the American Red Cross staff, serving in many positions until her retirement. Previous to working in Pittsfield, she had been with the Office of Volunteers, Red Cross Headquarters, Europe, in Stuttgart, Germany.
She was assigned to many disasters in Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Indiana, Kansas and Massachusetts.
While in Pittsfield, she was a member of South Congregational Church.
She served on the boards of the United Way, the YMCA, and was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood since 1956.
Her closest survivors are two great-nieces and a great-nephew.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Abby Florence Brent will be Saturday, Nov. 8, at 10 at the FORD FUNERAL HOME, Allen Chapel, 215 East Main St., Bridgeport, W.Va., with the Rev. Dale C. Waters officiating.
Burial will follow in Bridgeport Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Berkshire County Chapter of the Red Cross, P.O. Box 644, Pittsfield, MA 01201 or the Friendship Village of South Hills Employee Appreciation Fund, 1290 Boyce Road, Upper St. Clair, PA 15241.
