Arnold W. Butler

Arnold W. Butler, 81, of 47 Shaker Lane died Thursday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Pittsfield on Sept. 12, 1922, the son of Louis and Marion Wilmont Butler, he attended local schools and was a 1940 graduate of Pittsfield High School.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, during which he was a military police officer with Headquarters Company 1207th Service Command Unit from 1942 to 1946.

He was employed by the city of Pittsfield for more than 30 years, first as a truck driver in the sanitation department, then as a heavy equipment operator at the landfill. He retired in 1978.

Following his retirement, he worked for 17 years in the clubhouse at the Pontoosuc Country Club.

A member of the Immanuel Community Church, he was on the board of directors of American Legion Post 68, a life member of the Onota Fishing Club and a member of the Polish Community Club.

He enjoyed deep-sea fishing and traveling, especially to Ireland.

He and his wife, the former Dorothy Vickery, were married on Feb. 22, 1958.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Arnold W. Butler, 81, who died Oct. 30, will be on Monday at 10 at the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. Angela Buchauer, pastor of Immanuel Community Church, officiating.

Burial will follow in Hancock Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Sunday from 1 to 4 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations in his memory may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201. Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
