Louis Francis Palma

Louis Francis Palma, 78, of 16 Washington Mountain Road, Dalton, died Wednesday afternoon at his home.

Born in Pittsfield on May 28, 1925, son of Francesco and Margaret Lazzari Palma, he was a 1942 graduate of Pittsfield High School.

A World War II veteran, he served in the Army from August 1943 to January 1946. He received the Silver Star and the Purple Heart.

Following his discharge, Mr. Palma was employed by the former Birchard Buick as an auto body man. In 196l, he opened his own business, Pittsfield Auto Body, on Dalton Avenue, which he operated for 29 years until retiring in l990.

He was a communicant of All Souls' Church.

He was a member and past president of the Pittsfield Exchange Club, and a member and past president of the Massachusetts Auto Body Association.

He and his wife, the former Lola A. Jones Gordon, were married Sept. 3, l982. He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Joan Helen Urbanik, whom he married June 3, l950. She died Oct. 23, l978.

Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Christine P. Leeds of Dunwoody, Ga., Karen P. Halliday of South Glastonbury, Conn., and Lori P. Malcolm of Lebanon, Conn.; two stepsons, Lawrence Gordon of Richmond and Brian Gordon of Dalton; six stepdaughters, Susan Poincelot of Pittsfield, Glenda Sickell of Dalton, Eunice Dosier of Groveland, Calif., Michele Arseneau of Pittsfield, Carole Greene of Pittsfield, and Gayle Bourassa of Pittsfield; a brother, Frank Palma Jr. of Pittsfield; 23 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren.

Another daughter, Lynn Marie Palma, died in 1961. A stepdaughter, Paulette Gosselin, died Jan. l6, l990.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Louis Francis Palma, who died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, also leaves two nephews and three nieces. He was a beloved husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, brother, and uncle. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Oct. 25, at 9 a.m., to All Souls' Church, celebrated by Rev. Geoffrey J. Deeker, C.S.S., pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held today from 4 to 7 p.m., at DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Palma may be made to the Berkshire County Association for Retarded Citizens in memory of Mr. Palma's daughter, Lynn Marie, and in honor of his grandson, Jeffrey Bourassa, or to HospiceCare in The Berkshires in care of the funeral home.

He enjoyed a quiet retirement. One of his greatest pleasures was walking his white Alaskan Husky dog along Washington Mountain Road, where he was known by many passers-by. He also enjoyed countless hours of tending his lawn.
