Retired Sgt. Maj. Joseph A. Baity Sr

Retired Sgt. Maj. Joseph A. Baity Sr., 85, of 687 Summit Road died yesterday morning at home.

Born in Peru, Ind., on Aug. 9, 1918, son of Edward and Lula Holding Baity, he attended schools there.

He had been a resident of Richmond since 1964.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served under Gen. Patton in Europe. He also was a veteran of the Korean War and a regular Army advisor to the National Guard in Pittsfield and North Adams. He served in Vietnam with the 69th Armor, where he was awarded two Bronze Stars. He was discharged after 24 years of service.

Mr. Baity retired as office manager for T&J Contractors in 2000. Previously, he had worked at Emerson Construction for 20 years and then as a security guard at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.

He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Pittsfield.

He was a Little League baseball coach in Richmond and served on the Richmond Recreational Committee.

He and his wife of 54 years, the former Ella Gehbauer, were married in Alsbach, Germany.

Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Dale J. Baity of Richmond, Joseph A. Baity Jr. of Bennington, Vt., and Timothy D. Baity of Pittsfield; three daughters, Joyce L. Ryan of Pittsfield, Rosemary J. Baity of New London, Conn., and Sandra B. Mitchel of Bennington, seven grandchildren and a great-grandson.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Joseph A. Baity Sr. died in Richmond on Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003. Beloved grandfather to Joseph and Kerry Ryan, Matthew and Erin Mitchel, Jameson and Cooper Baity, and Christopher Hessler; great-grandfather to Damien Hessler; father-in-law to Joseph W. Ryan, William Mitchel, Lisa Baity and Kelly Baity.

He also leaves his sister-in-law, Gisela Morrison. The funeral will be tomorrow, Oct. 24, at 8:15 at DWYER FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 9 at St. Joseph's Church by the Rev. Michael Shershanovich, pastor. Burial will follow in Richmond Cemetery. Calling hours will be today, Oct. 23, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home.
