Josephine P. Palmieri, 72, of 726 Warwick Place, Naples, Fla., a native of Pittsfield, died Thursday at Hospice of Naples, Georgeson House.
Born on Oct. 20, 1930, the daughter of Pasquale and Margaret DeGesero Palmieri, she was a 1949 graduate of Pittsfield High School and received her nursing degree from the former St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in 1952. She also received a degree from the Army Advance Career Center in 1970.
She moved to Naples in 1989.
Miss Palmieri was a registered nurse in the Army Nurse Corps during the Vietnam War, including the Tet counteroffensive, retiring as a major in 1987 after 20 years of service.
She received several campaign medals and commendations.
While in Pittsfield, she was a communicant of Mount Carmel Church. In Naples, she was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church and a member of its choir, and a member of the Blessed Virgin Mary Society and the Berlin Medical Department Activity-International Medical Society.
She leaves three sisters, Anna S. Skowron and Arlene R. Herrick, both of Pittsfield, and Marguerite C. Kelly of Lady Lakes Villages, Fla.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Josephine P. Palmieri, 72, retired major of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, died Oct. 16, 2003. There will be no calling hours. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Monday at 9 at Mount Carmel Church by the Rev. Geoffrey Deeker, CSS, pastor.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to either the Make-a-Wish Foundation or St. Jude's Children's Hospital, both in care of DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
