Thomas P. Murphy

Thomas P. Murphy, 66, of 1070 Holmes Road died Thursday at home.

Born in Pittsfield on Aug. 30, 1937, son of James A. Murphy Sr. and Myrtle E. Smith Murphy, he was a 1955 graduate of St. Joseph's High School and received a bachelor's degree from St. Michael's College in Winooski, Vt., in 1959, and his master's degree from the former North Adams State College in 1963.

Mr. Murphy was a mathematics teacher at Taconic High School, retiring in 1999. He also was a mathematics teacher at the former South Junior High and Crosby Junior High schools. He was head of the mathematics department at Crosby.

A communicant of St. Teresa's Church, he was a member of the National Education Association and the Irish American Club, where he was a former board member. Following his retirement, he enjoyed traveling, especially to Ireland, Scotland and England.

He also was a bowler, fisherman and gardener.

He and his wife, the former Ann J. White, celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary Aug. 17. They were married in St. Joseph's Church.

Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Patricia A. Czuba of Clayton, N.C., Deborah J. Widdison of South Deerfield and Lynn M. Murphy of Keene, N.H.; two brothers, Dr. Edward F. Murphy of Syracuse, N.Y., and John P. Murphy of Pittsfield, and two grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Thomas P. Murphy, 66, who died Wednesday, will be Monday, Oct. 20, at 11:15 from DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at noon at St. Teresa's Church by the Rev. John J. Varley, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday from 1 to 4 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations in his memory may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or the American Cancer Society, both in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.

Mr. Murphy is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Matthew Patrick and Hailey Morgan Widdison. He was predeceased by five brothers, James A. Murphy Jr., and William D., Arthur E., and Bernard J. Murphy and Raymond A. Murphy Sr., and by a sister, Mary Knight.
