Michael A. Simon, 89, of 174 Benedict Road died yesterday at his home.
Born in Fall River on March 24, 1914, son of Ferris and Jamily Coury Simon, he was educated in Fall River and Pittsfield schools, and was a 1932 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
He graduated from the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts in 1948 with a degree in poultry husbandry.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served from 1941 to 1946 as a staff sergeant in the antitank platoon. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He participated in the Anzio campaign and was awarded several other medals and commendations.
A farmer and businessman for 31 years, he farmed in Carlisle and Lenox from 1948 to 1959. He owned and operated Tyler Street Package Store for many years. Before then, he had been employed at the former Stevens House of Furniture and the former England Brothers department store. He retired in 1979.
He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and a member of its Family Society. He was also a life member of VFW Post 448, American Legion Post 68 and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 13.
He loved to garden and work in his woodshop.
He leaves his wife, the former I. Freeda George, whom he married on June 21, 1948, at St. Teresa's Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, James M. Simon of Pittsfield; two daughters, Michele Simon-Grady and Mary Jane Massetti, both of Pittsfield; three sisters, Adele Simon, Alice Tucker and Margaret Zenni, all of Fall River; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Michael A. Simon, who died yesterday, will be held Thursday, Oct. 16, at 9:15 from DERY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Mary's Church, celebrated by the Rev. Paul A. Bombardier, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be today from 4 to 7 at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital or to the St. Jude Foundation, both in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201. Survivors include Mr. Simon's adored grandchildren, Michael Grady and his wife, Karen; Kimberley Grady; Scott Grady and his wife, Jackie; Laura Simon, and Joseph Simon; his cherished great-grandchildren, Emily, Michaela, Isabelle and Grace Mary Grady; his devoted sons-in-law Dave Grady and Robert Massetti; his devoted daughter-in-law, Victoria Simon, and his brother-in-law, Martin Zenni of Fall River.
He was predeceased by his loving sister, Annie Richmany, and his two brothers, Thomas and Samuel Simon. His greatest enjoyment in life was his family. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
