George Irving Jenks

George Irving Jenks, 79, of 163 Cheshire Road died yesterday morning at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Lenox on Oct. 6, 1923, son of George W. and Rachell Allen Jenks, he was a 1941 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served from 1943 to 1945 with the 37th Infantry Division in the Pacific, including on Guadalcanal, Bougainville and Luzon.
He was awarded a Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars, the Combat Infantryman Badge and two citations.
Mr. Jenks was employed as zookeeper by the city of Pittsfield for 29 years, retiring Jan. 1, 1986.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
A life member of VFW Post 448, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, raising coon hounds and watching Red Sox games.
He was a member of the Columbia County (N.Y.) Coon Hound Club.
He leaves a sister, Mildred Mularski of Pittsfield, and his longtime companion, Barbara Schindler.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for George Irving Jenks, 79, will be conducted Wednesday at 12:30 at First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Roger Davis. Burial will follow in East Nassau (N.Y.) Rural Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow, Sept. 30, from 4 to 7 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. Mr. Jenks was predeceased by a brother, Robert Jenks, and a sister, Beatrice Anderson. Survivors include nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church or to VFW Post 448 in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
