Maria C. "Mary" Aiello, 95, of 153 Newell St. died Friday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Amato, province of Catanzaro, Italy, on Nov. 17, 1907, daughter of Giuseppe and Angela Cantafio Gagliardi, she was raised by her stepmother, Sarafina Serbo Gagliardi, after the death of her mother. She attended schools in Italy and emigrated to the United States in 1928.
She moved to Lenox in 1931 and to Pittsfield in 1939.
Mrs. Aiello was employed by GE for 31 years. She worked in the plastics department and the power transformer division, retiring in 1972.
She was a communicant of Mount Carmel Church and a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs.
She enjoyed cooking, baking, her flower garden and feeding the birds in her yard.
Her husband, Antonio Aiello, whom she married July 29, 1929, in St. Ann's Church in Lenox, died Dec. 9, 2000.
She leaves five daughters, Concetta Stroffolino, Angelina Mickle, Diana Hugabone, Mary Smith and Antoinette Hendricks, all of Pittsfield; three sisters, Angela Burke of Pittsfield, and Jenny Dewkett and Rose Vecchia, both of Lee; 13 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. A son, Ralph Aiello, died at birth in 1931.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Maria C. "Mary" Gagliardi Aiello will be Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 9 from FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 at Mount Carmel Church by the Rev. Geoffrey J. Deeker, CSS, pastor. Burial will follow in the family plot at St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow, Sept. 29, from 4 to 7. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, nana, great-nana to her family.
Beloved mother of Concetta Stroffolino and her husband Ralph, Angelina Mickle and her husband George, Diana Hugabone and her husband Douglas Sr., Mary Smith and her deceased husband Richard Sr., Antoinette Hendricks and her husband Austin. Cherished grandmother of 13 and great-grandmother of 21. Dear sister of Angela Burke, Jenny Dewkett, Rose Vecchia. Also survived by several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins and a family friend, Alicia Ferrarin.
She was predeceased by a sister, Catherine DiGrigoli, and by three brothers, Peter and Joseph F. Gagliardi and Peter S. Gagliardi Sr.
