Arthur Orville Blessing Jr

Arthur Orville Blessing Jr., 59, of 292 Connecticut Ave. died Friday at Berkshire Medical Center of cancer.

Born in Pittsfield on Dec. 26, 1943, son of Arthur O. Blessing Sr. and Theodora Eldridge Blessing, he graduated from the former Dalton High School in 1961.

He lived in Dalton for 25 years.

He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, serving from 1961 to 1965.

Mr. Blessing was employed by Crane & Co. as a watermark technical inspector at its Old Berkshire and Bay State mills for 37 years, retiring in August 2001.

A bowler, he was past president of the Skyline Bowling League at Ken's Bowl and won several awards for being top fund-raiser in Muscular Dystrophy bowl-a-thons.

He enjoyed playing golf and motorcycle riding. He also was a master woodworker and enjoyed fixing things.

From the late 1970s until 1984, he was a bass guitar player for the Shame and Kool Breeze bands.

He and his wife, the former Sandra L. DiPierro, were married July 23, 1966, in Dalton.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Robert A. Blessing of the town of Washington and James E. Blessing of Pittsfield; a brother, David E. Blessing of Pittsfield; a sister, Janet Winnard of Pittsfield, and four grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Arthur Orville Blessing Jr., who died Friday, Sept. 19, will be conducted Monday, Sept. 22, at noon at DERY FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Irene Jones. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 4 to 7 at the funeral home.

Mr. Blessing also leaves his daughters-in-law, Nancy and Sheila; his four beloved grandchildren, Megan, Ryan, Parker and Austin Blessing, and his beloved dog, Brandon. His sister, Carol Garcia, late of Pittsfield, died in September 1980. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Blessing may be made to the Berkshire County Jimmy Fund in honor of Dylan Larochelle in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
