Carolyn Claffie

Carolyn Claffie, 75, of 75 Weathervane Way, Brewster, formerly of Dalton, died Saturday at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

Born in Pittsfield on Oct. 12, 1927, daughter of Wallace and Mabel Roberts Holden, she was a 1945 graduate of Pittsfield High School.

She moved to Cape Cod in 1996.

Primarily a homemaker, Mrs. Claffie was employed by New England Telephone & Telegraph Co. from 1945 to 1956, attaining the position of district force supervisor.

Mrs. Claffie was a communicant of St. Agnes’ Church, where she was a eucharistic minister, a member of the Rosary Society, visited the sick and shut-ins, and taught Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. She attended Our Lady of the Cape Church in Brewster.

Active in community work, she had volunteered for Right to Life, Hillcrest Hospital in Pittsfield and the Bobby Kidney Sunshine Club.

She enjoyed creative writing, especially poems, painting, sketching and spending time on Cape Cod beaches.

She and her husband, Richard F. Claffie, an attorney and former Dalton town counsel and planner, were the first to be married in the then-new St. Teresa’s Church in Pittsfield on Oct. 12, 1954.

Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, David R. Claffie of Westford and Stephen G. Claffie of Limington, Maine; three daughters, Ann C. Mottley of Pittsfield, Jane R. Strong of Harwich and Mary C. Secor of Brewster; two sisters, Elizabeth Chumley and Marion Burnett, both of Rome, Ga., and four grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Carolyn Holden Claffie, who died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, will be Thursday, Sept. 18, at 9:15 from DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 at St. Agnes’ Church by the Rev. Christopher A. Malatesta, pastor. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Mrs. Claffie also leaves her four grandchildren, William, Erin, Tyler and Robert. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to St. Joseph’s Indian School in care of the funeral home, 890 East Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.
