Benjamin N. Bowers

Benjamin N. Bowers, 105, of 26 Rubin Drive, Salisbury Estates, died Sunday at Berkshire Medical Center.

He had resided at Hillcrest Commons for several years.

Born in Waucoma, Iowa, on April 27, 1898, son of George F. and Bernice A. Burleson Bowers, he graduated from the University of South Dakota with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering in 1921.

During World War I, he was in the Officer Candidate School of the coast artillery, stationed at Fort Monroe, Va.

Mr. Bowers was employed with GE for 40 years, first in Schenectady, N.Y., then in Philadelphia in the high-voltage bushing section. He came Pittsfield in 1929 as a design and development engineer. He retired on May 1, 1963, as a standards engineer in the ordnance department, components engineering unit.

After retiring, he taught mathematics for eight years at Berkshire Farm for Boys in New Lebanon, N.Y., then worked part time for 12 years as the bookkeeper for the Berkshire County Historical Society. He also was a supervisory usher at Tanglewood in Lenox from the time the Shed was built in 1938 until 1993.

He held three patents on high-voltage bushings and had several technical articles published in trade and professional journals. He was a registered professional engineer in Massachusetts, a full member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers.

Mr. Bowers was a member of First United Methodist Church, and a former member of the Historical Society board and the Stanley Club. He enjoyed playing tennis until he was 93.

He had been president of the Christian Center, the Pittsfield Area Council of Churches and the former Pittsfield Community Concert Association. He was featured in an article in The Eagle for his 103rd birthday.

His first wife, Mary Elizabeth Bradley, died in 1935.

He leaves his wife, the former Janice Rhodes, whom he married Aug. 11, 1945; a son, Benjamin Bradley Bowers of Syracuse, N.Y.; a daughter, Mary Ellen Pariseau of Pittsfield; eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Benjamin N. Bowers will be Thursday at 2 at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Roger Davis officiating. Following cremation, burial will be at a later date.

Calling hours at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME will be on Wednesday from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Visiting Nurse Association or the Christian Center in care of the the funeral home, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
