Robert Peter Leahey

Robert Peter Leahey, 77, of 165 Churchill St. died Friday evening at home.

Born in Westfield on Nov. 5, 1925, son of Thomas L. and Grace Mangum Leahey, he was a graduate of Westfield High School. He earned a degree in international business from the University of Massachusetts in 1949. He also was a 1959 graduate of New York University.

A Navy veteran of World War II, he served as a radioman second class from 1943 until 1946.

Mr. Leahey was employed as a data processor at the former Beloit-Jones Co. in Dalton, retiring as director of programming in 1985 after 20 years of service. He also had worked at IBM, US Gypsum Co., GE and A.H. Rice Silk Mill.

He was a communicant of St. Mark’s Church. He was a volunteer for many organizations, including the Berkshire Talking Chronicle, Silvio O. Conte National Archives, the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, where he also was a guide, and Elder Services of Berkshire County.

He was an artist, acted with the Town Players and other theater groups, and enjoyed cooking, cross-country skiing, the outdoors and traveling.

He leaves his wife, the former Eleanor Aptacy, whom he married Sept. 9, 1983, and a brother, William T. Leahey of Stockbridge.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Robert P. Leahey, 77, who died Sept. 12, 2003, will be Tuesday at 10:15 from DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 at St. Mark’s Church by the Rev. Henry Dorsch, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Monday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society in care of the funeral home. Mr. Leahey also is survived by a son, Phillip Dreyfus of Albany, Calif.; two granddaughters; three sisters-in-law, Marie Leahey, Gloria Robinson and Joan Howard, several nieces and nephews, and many close friends. He also leaves his two cats, Lily and Otto.
