Viola Barzowskas

Viola Barzowskas, 82, formerly of 176 Columbus Ave., Berkshire Town Apartments, died yesterday morning at Springside of Pittsfield, where she had resided since June.

Born in Pittsfield on March 19, 1921, daughter of William F. and Josephine H. Hansen Hoffmann, she was a 1939 graduate of Pittsfield High School.

She moved to Punta Gorda, Fla., in 1976, and returned to Pittsfield in 1990.

Primarily a homemaker, Mrs. Barzowskas had once worked for the A.H. Rice Silk Mill and Wonder Bread.

She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church. Before moving to Florida, she had been a longtime member of the Central Berkshire Bowmen. She also was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons and the Ralph Froio Senior Center.

She was an avid hunter, taking 23 deer in 21 years, and an accomplished archer, winning 13 trophies. She also enjoyed fishing and target shooting.

Her husband, Charles C. Barzowskas, whom she married April 19, 1941, in St. Joseph’s Church, died May 9, 1998.

She leaves two daughters, Carol A. Talora of Lee and Joan B. Broderick of Pittsfield; a sister, Mildred L. Laramee of Great Barrington, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Viola Barzowskas, who died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003, will be private and at the convenience of the family, with burial in Pittsfield Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield. Mrs. Barzowskas is survived by her son-in-law, Richard Broderick Sr.; five grandchildren, Tina McLaughlin, Richard Broderick Jr., Joseph Talora, Barbara Broderick and Joanie Russo; and five great-grandchildren, Brianna, Amanda, Sean, Karli and Kaeli. She was predeceased by three brothers, Lester in 1964, Ferman in 1963 and William in 1968.
