Leonard J. Murphy, 84, of 44 Anita Drive died Tuesday at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center in Lenox, where he had resided for six weeks.
Born in Pittsfield on July 9, 1919, son of Dennis and Mary Kelly Murphy, he was a 1938 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
A Marine Corps veteran of World War II, he was a squad leader with the 2nd Marine Division at Guadalcanal and was in the first wave to land on the beach at Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands. He was awarded the Purple Heart and two Presidential Citations, among several decorations for his service.
Mr. Murphy was employed as an assembler in the power transformer department of GE, retiring in 1981 after 45 years of service.
He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners’ clubs.
He enjoyed playing golf, the Green Bay Packers, Notre Dame football, gardening and his hunting dogs.
His wife, the former Ethel C. “Bing†Ahlen, whom he married Oct. 3, 1944, in St. Mary’s Church, died Feb. 15.
He leaves two sons, Dennis M. Murphy and Peter T. Murphy, both of Pittsfield; a daughter, Lynn K. Murphy of Pittsfield; a brother, Harry Murphy of Shelbyville, Ind.; two sisters, Helen Murphy and Ann Sheerin, both of Pittsfield; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Another son, Gary L. Murphy, died March 28, 1994.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Leonard J. Murphy, 84, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003. He was beloved grandfather to Todd and Brian Rilla, Jennifer and Michael Murphy, and Shauna and Calvin Murphy. Loving great-grandpa to Christian and Joshua Rilla. Mr. Murphy also leaves his loving daughter-in-law, Denise Murphy.
He was predeceased by a brother, Bill, and a sister, Kathleen. The funeral will be Saturday, Aug. 30, at 8:15 at DWYER FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 9 at Sacred Heart Church by the Rev. James K. Joyce, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Calling hours will be tomorrow, Aug. 29, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Pittsfield Boys’ & Girls’ Club in care of the funeral home. He also was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Medal with four Battle Stars and the American Theater and Victory medals during World War II.
