Stephanie Barber

August 26, 2003

Stephanie Barber, 84, of Hawthorne Street and New York City died Tuesday morning at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, shortly after being stricken with a heart attack.

Born in Jamaica, N.Y., on Jan. 28, 1919, daughter of Victor and Rose Nager Frey, she attended schools there. She earned a bachelor’s degree in physiology from Hunter College in New York City.

A resident of Lenox for 57 years, she and her first husband, Philip Barber, in 1950 founded the Music Inn, a ground-breaking venue for many now-legendary jazz musicians. They also owned and operated the former de Heredia estate, Wheatleigh, in Stockbridge as an inn and private club from 1960 to 1975.

She also was active as a real estate broker in Berkshire County for many years. (A more complete story on Barber’s influence on music in the Berkshires was published on the front page of yesterday’s Eagle.)

Her first husband died in 1981.

She and her husband, Arthur N. Collins, were married Nov. 25, 1989.

Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Charles Victor Barber of Washington, D.C., and Hilary Williams Barber of Amherst; three stepsons, Willson Benn Barber of Becket, Benjamin Reynolds Barber of New York City and Richmond, and Nicholas Hillhouse Collins of Glens Falls, N.Y.; three stepdaughters, Edith Trelease Wyman of Beaver, W.Va., Amy Victoria Hoptay of Sewickley, Pa., and Leslie Anne Collins of Augusta, Maine, 15 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The family of Stephanie Frey Barber will receive guests at ROCHE FUNERAL HOME in Lenox this evening from 4 to 7. A private graveside service will take place at the convenience of the family in Stockbridge Town Cemetery.

A public memorial service and celebration of her life will be conducted at a time and place to be announced this fall. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Music Inn Legacy Foundation in care of the funeral home, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240.

Stephanie also is survived by her beloved grandchildren, Jeremy, Rebecca, Kate, Olive, Nellie, Alexander and Julia Barber, and her great-granddaughter, Sophie; and her stepgrandchildren, Anada, Sarah, Jeanne, Jessica, Claire, Katherine, Mariah and Alyssa.
