Erich J. Strobl

Erich J. Strobl, 93, of 45 Walchenbach Circle, Salisbury Estates, died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Vienna, Austria, on Jan. 20, 1910, son of Richard and Leonie Schnabl Strobl, he attended schools there and received his doctorate of law from the University of Vienna.
He emigrated to the United States in 1938 and worked in New York, St. Louis and Milwaukee.
He served in the Army for five years. At the end of World War II, while overseas, he received an honorary discharge for the convenience of the government to accept civilian employment with the U.S. Allied Commission for Austria. He was instrumental in the restoration of the free international railroad and highway service, which was interrupted during the war.
He represented the U.S. element at international conferences, which dealt with these efforts, and acted as a liaison between the United States and the Austrian representation.
In 1948, he returned to this country with his wife, the former Edith K. Kullnig, whom he married in Vienna on Oct. 28, 1948.
They settled in River Edge, N.J., where they lived for 26 years while he was employed by international divisions of Foster Wheeler, Archer Daniels Midland and Bunge Corp.
He retired in 1976 and moved to Stephentown, N.Y., and to Salisbury Estates in 1998.
Mr. Strobl was a member of the Stephentown Historical Society. He enjoyed woodworking and reading.
He leaves his wife.

Strobl will be Wednesday, Aug. 27, from 5 to 7 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St. Other survivors include a brother-in-law, Rudolph Kullnig of Nassau, N.Y., and a cousin, Ernst Schabl of Wilmette, Ill. Omission of flowers is requested by the family. Donations in his memory may be made to the Stephentown Historical Society, Box 11, Stephentown, NY 12168.
