Sister Carolyn V. King

Sister Carolyn V. King, 77, the former Sister Thomas Maria, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, died yesterday at Mont Marie Health Care Center in Holyoke.
She was a native of Pittsfield.
Born on March 9, 1926, daughter of James F. and Florence V. Plain King, she attended schools in Hinsdale and was a 1943 graduate of St. Joseph’s High School. She graduated from the Elms College in Chicopee with a bachelor of arts degree and earned a master of arts degree in French, Spanish and Russian from Assumption College in Worcester and a master of arts degree in Spanish from Middlebury (Vt.) College.
Most recently, she was a support staff volunteer at Mont Marie. She had taught languages in the secondary schools of the dioceses of Springfield, Worcester and Providence, R.I., for 30 years.
She also worked as an interpreter for the state Welfare Department in Worcester and Springfield until retiring in 1993 to Mont Marie. After retiring, she tutored in the GAL program in Ludlow and at Springfield Technical Community College.
Besides her sisters in the religious community, she leaves two nephews and two nieces.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Sister Carolyn V. King will be celebrated Monday, Aug. 18, at 5 in Mont Marie Chapel, Holyoke.
Burial will follow in Mont Marie Cemetery. Calling hours at Mont Marie will be Monday from 1:30 to 4:30, with a Prayer Service at 3.
Survivors include her sister-in-law, Barbara King of Enfield, Conn., and two nephews, Thomas King of Northfield and William King of Enfield; two nieces, Maryanne Oliver of Enfield and Susan Miller of Bangor, Maine. She was predeceased by two brothers, Warren and Thomas King. Memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, Mont Marie, 34 Lower Westfield Road, Suite 1, Holyoke, MA 01040-2739. Arrangements are entrusted to SAMPSON FAMILY CHAPELS.
