Laurence J. Censato

Laurence J. Censato, 87, of 170 Lenox Road died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center after a battle with cancer.

Born in Richmond on Oct. 28, 1915, son of Antonio and Maria DeLago Censato, he attended schools there.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served as a staff sergeant with the 83rd Mortar Chemical Battalion in the North African and European campaigns. He received numerous commendations and honors.

A plumber and steamfitter, Mr. Censato was employed by the former Berkshire Woolen Co. in Pittsfield for many years and then by Kimberly-Clark Corp. in Lee for 15 years. He retired in 1981.

He was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church in West Stockbridge.

He was active in the preservation of the history of Richmond.

He and his wife, the former Mary Biasin, were married Dec. 1, 1941, in St. Patrick’s Church.

Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Lorraine Salvi of Laconia, N.H.; a sister, Ida Rasia of Lee; a brother, August Censato of Pittsfield, and two grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Laurence J. Censato, who died Aug. 9, 2003, will be Wednesday at 10 at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at St. Patrick’s Church celebrated by the Rev. Steven F. McGuigan, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. The family will receive friends tomorrow from 5 to 8 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Patrick’s Church in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.

He leaves his loving wife, Mary; his daughter and her husband, Lorraine and Steven Salvi; two beloved grandchildren, Melissa Salvi Duyon and Kevin M. Salvi, and a loving extended family of sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Mario and Emilio.
