Charles E. Edwards, 90, of Melbourne Place Assisted Living Community, died Sunday at Berkshire Medical Center, where he had been a patient for a short time.
He had resided at Melbourne since 1998.
Born in Hartford, Conn., on Sept. 23, 1912, son of Gardner and Elsa Mellgren Edwards, he was educated in schools there. He had resided at 872 South Quaker Lane, West Hartford, Conn., and later at Devonshire Estates in Lenox.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Edwards was employed as a machinist for 30 years at Pratt & Whitney’s small tool division in West Hartford, retiring in 1973.
He was a former member of Elmwood Community Church in West Hartford, and a member of the Masons Wyllys Lodge 99 in Connecticut.
He enjoyed working around his house and was an avid traveler.
His wife, the former Doris Jones, whom he married May 12, 1942, died Feb. 12, 1987.
He leaves a son, Douglas E. Edwards of Windsor; a daughter, Lynne A. Edwards of Hinsdale, N.H.; two sisters, Elsie Sottile of Naperville, Ill., and Ruth Hannon of Enfield, Conn., three grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. He also leaves his longtime companion, Mary Thompson of West Hartford.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Charles E. Edwards, 90, who died Aug. 3, 2003, will be held in West Hartford with burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford, Conn.
There will be no calling hours. He was predeceased by three other sisters, Helen Cousins, Grace Percival and Virginia King. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201, which is in charge of arrangements.
