Bernardine “Bunny” Lane Cook

Bernardine “Bunny” Lane Cook, 81, of Kimball Farms, died Sunday at home.

Born in Pittsfield on Dec. 6, 1921, daughter of Bernard M. Collins Sr. and Elizabeth Murphy Collins, she was a 1939 graduate of St. Joseph’s High School.

She also attended the College of St. Rose in Albany, N.Y. She had resided in Pittsfield and the state of Florida before moving to Kimball Farms.

Mrs. Cook was employed as a social worker with the former state Department of Public Welfare’s office in Pittsfield, retiring in 1984 after 25 years of service. She also had worked at the American Heart Association and as a copywriter in the advertising department of WBRK radio, both in Pittsfield.

She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Lee.

An avid bridge player and golfer, she was a former member of Jonathan’s Landing Country Club in Jupiter, Fla., and the Pittsfield Country Club.

She was a member of the Pittsfield Junior League and enjoyed traveling and reading. She supported the preservation of the Lenox Library and contributed to many scholarship funds in Berkshire County.

Her first husband, Baxter Lane of Lenox, was killed in World War II in 1944.

Her husband, Lawrence B. Cook, whom she married July 19, 1947, died Jan. 3, 1974.

She leaves a daughter, Barbara C. Fabiani of McLean, Va.; two brothers, Dr. William K. Collins and Dr. Bernard M. Collins Jr., both of Lee; three sisters, Helen C. Meehan and Jeanne C. Miller, both of Lee, and Sheila C. Burns of Juno Beach, Fla., and three grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Bernardine Cook leaves her loving grandchildren, Elizabeth, Katie and Madeleine Fabiani. She was predeceased by two sisters, Mary “Teacie” Furer in June and Elizabeth Miller in 1992, and a brother, Daniel J. Collins in 1980.

The funeral will be Thursday at 9:15 at KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Mary’s Church. Burial will be private at a later date. Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home.

Friends wishing may make donations to a scholarship fund at the Potomac School in memory of Bernardine C. Cook, Grandmother of Elizabeth, Katie and Madeleine Fabiani (students at Potomac School), Potomac School Road, McLean, VA 22101, or in care of funeral home.
