Henry G. Sokop

Henry G. Sokop, 90, of 68 Oak Hill Road died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in New York City on July 23, 1913, the son of George and Anna Yakymow Sokop, he graduated from Patchogue (N.Y.) High School in 1931 and from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1935, where he was second in his class.

Mr. Sokop was employed by GE from 1936 to 1976.

He worked in the high-voltage lab and was manager of product planning in the voltage regulator division.

He was a member of IEEE, the Elfun Society and Professional Engineers Association.

A golfer, he was a longtime member of Wahconah Country Club. He also enjoyed gardening.

His wife, the former Jane Maloney, whom he married June 26, 1937, died June 18.

He leaves three sons, Lawrence H. Sokop of Holyoke, Gerard J. Sokop of Hatfield and Thomas G. Sokop of Pittsfield; two daughters, Patricia J. Babineau of Meriden, Conn., and Margaret M. Winslow of Dalton; 16 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Peter J. Sokop.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Henry G. Sokop, 90, who died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, will be Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 10:30 from DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME in Dalton, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at St. Agnes’ Church celebrated by the Rev. Christopher A. Malatesta, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 9 to 10:30 at the funeral home.

Mr. Sokop leaves his daughters-in-law, Mary (Mrs. Lawrence) Sokop, Patricia (Mrs. Gerard) Sokop and Paula (Mrs. Thomas) Sokop; his sons-in-law, Richard Babineau and Lyndal Winslow; his grandchildren, Cynthia Greene, Laura Walsh, Stephen Sokop, Jennifer Toole, Julie Rozell, Cathleen Hargreaves, Mark, Thomas, Michael and Amy Babineau, Christine Ganon, Matthew, Judy and Jeremy Sokop, and Daniel and Patrick Fulton; and his great-grandchildren, Haley and Jack Henry Babineau, Emily Jane Ganon, Ryan and Matthew Walsh, Rhiannon Toole, and Grace and Conor Sokop. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Sokop may be made to the National Kidney Foundation or Friends of Renal Dialysis, in care of the funeral home, 890 East Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.
