Robert J. “Sleepy” McDonough

Robert J. “Sleepy” McDonough, 70, of Cedar Street died yesterday at Hillcrest Commons.

Born in Pittsfield on Aug. 24, 1932, son of Donald J. McDonough and Doris Granger McDonough Grant, he was a 1950 graduate of Pittsfield High School and attended Suffield Academy.

He served in the Army during the Korean War, from January 1953 to December 1954.

Mr. McDonough owned and operated the former J.A. McDonough and Sons, a painting and wallpapering business founded by his grandfather, Joseph A. McDonough, from 1966 until his retirement in 1992. He also had been employed by the former New England Furniture Store and was manager of the Albany Store in Latham, N.Y.

In his younger years, he was employed as a social activities director at the former Avaloch Resort in Lenox.

He was a communicant of St. Mark’s and St. Joseph’s churches and was an enthusiastic horse racing fan.

He leaves a daughter, Michelle D. Pettograsso of Pittsfield; his companion of many years, Venera “Vinnie” Speranzo; three stepsons, Lucien, Larry and Allen Laurent, and three grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Robert J. “Sleepy” McDonough, 70, died June 28, 2003. The funeral will be Wednesday at 8:15 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Joseph’s Church.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Mr. McDonough also is survived by a son-in-law, Ralph Pettograsso, and will be sadly missed by his three grandchildren, Justin Joseph, Bryce Robert and Marianne Nicole Pettograsso. He was a father figure to Jimmy Speranzo and grandfather figure to Jimmy’s daughter, Monica. He will be sadly missed by all the Speranzo and Fazio families.

In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Church in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
