Shirley A. Frenkel, 79, of 122 Ann Drive died yesterday morning at home, following a long illness.
Born in Northampton on Feb. 11, 1924, daughter of Adolph and Dora Silverman Raymond, she was a 1942 graduate of Northampton High School.
She graduated with honors in 1945 from Smith College and received graduate degrees from Columbia University and McGill University in Montreal.
During World War II, she was active with the Red Cross.
Mrs. Frenkel was the founder of Royal Realty, working there until the early 1980s. Previously, she had worked with her husband, George Frenkel, owner of Royal Cleaners for many years.
She also was a substitute teacher in the Pittsfield Public Schools. While attending Columbia, she was a fashion model in New York City.
A 40-year member of Temple Anshe Amunim, she was past president of the women’s division of B’nai B’rith and a lifetime member of Hadassah.
Active in political affairs, she worked with others to build a new library and in campaigns to fluoridate the water. She was the director of children’s plays at the former Girls’ Club and the Drama Club at the Jewish Community Center.
She also was active with the Smith College book sales and enjoyed writing children’s stories.
She and her husband were married Jan. 23, 1949, in Northampton.
Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Raymond Frenkel of Amherst and Steven Frenkel of Fairlawn, N.J.; a daughter, Wendy Frenkel-Garofalo of Lanesboro; a brother Dr. Sherwin Raymond of Ridgefield, N.J.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Another son, Andrew, died March 28, 1965.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Shirley A. Frenkel, age 79, died peacefully at home on June 25, 2003. There will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be held Thursday at 2 in Pittsfield Cemetery, with Rabbi Harold Salzman officiating.
Those attending are asked to meet inside the cemetery gates at 1:45. If friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society in care of DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
