Anne D. Roche

Anne D. Roche, 85, of Housatonic Street died yesterday afternoon at Providence Care Center, where she had resided since January.

Born in Nashua, N.H., on Oct. 5, 1917, daughter of Bartholomew and Anna Mae Murphy Degnan, she attended schools there, in Providence, R.I., in North Adams and in Lenox, where she was a 1935 graduate of Lenox High School.

She was a 1939 graduate of the former North Adams State Teachers College, now Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, where she earned a bachelor of arts degree in education.

Mrs. Roche taught at the former Lenox Dale grade school from 1940 to 1944, when she moved to Framingham and taught third grade. Following her marriage in 1954, she returned to Lenox.

She began teaching in 1961, when she was appointed as head teacher at Morris School. At the time of her retirement in 1983, she was a second-grade teacher at the former Cameron School.

Mrs. Roche was among the first participants in the Framingham Heart Study.

She was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church and a former member of its choir and the Rosary Altar Society, and of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

She enjoyed reading, playing cards and the piano, and was a fan of the Red Sox and the Boston Celtics.

She was a lover of animals, in particular the many dogs she adopted over the years.

Her husband, Edward J. Roche, whom she married Jan. 2, 1954, in St. Bridgette’s Church in Framingham, died Aug. 12, 2000.

She leaves a son, Edward J. “Ned” Roche Jr. of Lenox Dale; a daughter, Kathleen M. Gates of the town of Washington, Mass., and a step-grandson.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Anne D. Roche is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Anne McIntosh Roche of Lenox Dale; her son-in-law, Richard W. Gates of Washington; her step-grandson, Avery O. McIntosh of Pittsfield; many nieces and nephews, both in this area and in Rhode Island, eastern Massachusetts, New Hampshire and New Jersey, and her beloved companion, Shadow.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Ann Roche, in 1954 and by two brothers, Paul A. Degnan in 1949 and Robert Degnan in 1962. The funeral will be Wednesday at 8:15 from ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Ann’s Church in Lenox concelebrated by the Rev. Christopher J. Waitekus, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Ann’s Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. The family requests that those who wish to make memorial contributions may do so either to the Lenox Library, the Berkshire Humane Society or to St. Ann’s Church, all in care of the funeral home, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240.
