Alice Bates

June 15, 2003

Alice Bates, 86, of 45 Main St. died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Websterville, Vt., on Sept. 2, 1916, daughter of Jean Baptiste and Matilda Decoteau Beaulieu, she was educated in local schools and graduated from Burlington High School.

She moved to the Berkshires in 1942.

Mrs. Bates was employed by Follwell’s Greenhouses on North Street for 20 years. She retired in 1990.

She was a communicant of North American Martyrs Church and enjoyed flowers, gardening, playing bridge and visiting Cape Cod.

She and her husband, Edward L. Bates Jr., celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary Jan. 25.

Besides her husband, she leaves three sons, Robert P. Bates of Adams, John J. Bates of Dalton and Dennis R. Bates of Pittsfield; a daughter, Kathryn “Katie” Ciliberti of Peru; a sister, Doris Tomasi of Bennington, Vt., and 14 grandchildren. Another son, Edward L. “Bruddy” Bates III, died Nov. 6, 1986, while awaiting a heart/lung transplant necessitated by his Vietnam War service.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Alice Beaulieu Bates, 86, who died June 15, 2003, will be Wednesday, June 18, at 10:15 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at St. Agnes’ Church celebrated by the Rev. Christopher Malatesta, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Pittsfield. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 3 to 6 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Bates also leaves her daughters-in-law, Janice Bates, Joanne Bates, Joan Bates and Debbie Shaver; her son-in-law, John Ciliberti, and her grandchildren, Shane, Spencer, Justin, Luke, Joshua, Alyssa, Ryan, Randy, Caitlin, Amanda and Erin Bates, and Sara and Jessie Ciliberti. Memorial donations may be made to North American Martyrs’ Choir in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
