William F. Hanford

William F. Hanford, 91, formerly of 111 Brown St., died Saturday at Springside of Pittsfield, where he had resided for two years. .
Born in Pittsfield on Aug. 26, 1911, son of Thomas and Frances Walling Hanford, he was a 1931 graduate of Pittsfield High School, where he excelled at football, basketball and baseball.
He also attended Northeastern University.
He served in the Marine Corps during World War II.
A metal plater, Mr. Hanford owned and operated Pittsfield Plating Co. on Elm Street for several years. He also was employed by GE in the plastics division for 13 years and worked at several other occupations, including Ma’s Restaurant on Silver Lake, which was owned and operated by his mother and brothers, and building superintendent of the Pittsfield YMCA for 10 years and of the Berkshire Common until he turned 75.
He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church and a member of the GE Athletic Association, where he served as a former president of the club; he was also chairman of the Winter Carnival.
When he was younger, he played for the former GEAA and the Elmvale Worsteds basketball teams. He had a lifelong interest in politics and was a life member of the Pittsfield American Legion, Charles Persip post.
His wife, the former Helen T. Gilmartin, whom he married April 23, 1934, died May 13.
He leaves a daughter, Sally McColgan of Oak Park, Va.; three sons, John D. Hanford of Pittsfield, Mark A. Hanford of Becket and Timothy J. Hanford of Raynham; a sister, Dorothy Brail of Pittsfield; 17 grandchildren, and 36 great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- William F. Hanford, 91, died May 17, 2003. Calling hours will be Monday from 5 to 7 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. A celebration of his life will be held Tuesday at 9:45 at the funeral home, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:30 at St. Mary’s Church celebrated by the Rev. Paul Bombardier, pastor.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Pittsfield Little League Association or Pittsfield Babe Ruth Association, both in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201. William will be fondly remembered by his son-in-law, Bernard McColgan, and his daughters-in-law, Candace, Theresa and Kathryn Hanford. Bill was also predeceased by his brothers, retired Col. Thomas B. Hanford and Chester Hanford, and by his sister, Grace Hanford.
