Ronald J. Halpin

Ronald J. Halpin, 65, of 158 Plunkett St., died Thursday afternoon at Tufts University Medical Center in Boston.

Born in Pittsfield April 29, 1938, son of Mildren Barden Halpin Thompson and George T. Halpin, he attended Lenox schools and graduated in 1956 from the former Lenox High School, where he was a baseball player and voted MVP of the Western Massachusetts champion Lenox High basketball team of 1956.

He attended Western Maryland College and served in the Marine Corps.

In 1977, as owner and president, Mr. Halpin focused his efforts on R.J. Halpin Inc., a petroleum transportation business that he started in the 1960s, which eventually branched out to include the business’ two current names, China Grove Transport Inc. and Pinnacle Transportation Inc.

In 1959 he had opened his own gas and service station, Halpin’s Mobil, on Main Street in Lenox. He later owned and operated a Texaco station on Housatonic Street in Lee from 1969 to 1977.

He was a parishioner of St. Stephen’s Church in Pittsfield and was a member of the Marine Corps League.

He was also active in Tri Town youth hockey for many years and had sponsored his own team, the Halpin Haulers.

He leaves his wife, the former Alice Wood, whom he married in St. Ann’s Church in Lenox on Oct. 4, 1958; one son, Mark J. Halpin of Valatie, N.Y.; one daughter, Susan M. Halpin of Pittsfield; one brother, G. David Halpin of Pittsfield, and four grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Ronald J. Halpin will be Monday at 10 from the ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, followed by Requiem Eucharist at 11 at St. Stephen’s Church in Pittsfield. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery in Lenox.

Calling hours at the funeral home will be Sunday from 4 to 7. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, those who wish to may make donations in Mr. Halpin’s memory to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240. Mr. Halpin is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Lyndsay, Caroline, Bryant and Quinn.
