Daniel Landers

Daniel Landers, 66, of 202 Orchard Road died Saturday afternoon at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.

Born in Youghal, County Cork, Ireland, on Dec. 7, 1936, son of Daniel T. and Bridget Power Landers, he was a graduate of Christian Brothers Elementary School and Youghal Vocational Technical School, both in Ireland, and Hammersmith Polytechnical School in England.

He emigrated to the United States in 1966 and became a citizen.

He earned a teaching certificate from Westfield State College and passed a state proficiency exam in cabinetmaking and mill carpentry.

A carpenter and cabinetmaker, Mr. Landers was employed by the Pittsfield Public Schools as a woodworking teacher in the former Crosby and North junior high schools. He also taught vocational courses at Pathfinder Regional Vocational Technical High School in Palmer and Smith Agricultural Vocational High School in Northampton, where he taught carpentry, drafting and technology.

He retired in 2000 because of ill health. Before that, he was a journeyman at C.M. Goodrich & Sons in Pittsfield and later worked for United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local 444, including as a foreman and steward, for all phases of construction until 1975.

He was a communicant of St. Agnes’ Church, where he sang in the choir. He participated in the Dalton Rotary Follies and was a member of AA, both for 13 years. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Berkshire Hills Country Club. He also enjoyed bowling.

He leaves his wife, the former Donna M. DiSilva, whom he married May 18, 1973.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Daniel James Landers of Arlington, and a sister, Catherine O’Mahoney of Youghal.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Daniel Landers, who died Saturday, May 10, 2003, will be Friday, May 16, at 9:15 from DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 at St. Agnes’ Church by the Rev. Christopher A. Malatesta, pastor. Burial will follow in Ashuelot Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday, May 15, from 4 to 8 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home, 890 East Main St., Dalton, MA 01226. He also leaves nine nephews, Frank Landers, Owen O’Mahoney, Alan O’Mahoney and Donald O’Mahoney, all of Ireland, as well as James Martin, Devon Martin, Matthew DiSilva, James Michael DiSilva and Christian DiSilva; and four nieces, Jessica Savage, Meghan Martin, Alysha DiSilva and Jennifer DiSilva.
