George A. Brown, 86, of Popponesset Beach, Mashpee, formerly of Pittsfield, died Sunday, May 11, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
Born in Lanesboro on June 26, 1916, son of George and Anna Rhinehart Brown, he was a 1934 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Battle of the Bulge.
Mr. Brown was employed by GE in the ordnance department, where he became foreman and group leader, retiring in 1978 after 35 years of service. As a young man, he worked on the Rhinehart family farm.
He and his wife, the former Eleanore Rita MacKennedy, also owned and operated the Heart of the Berkshires Motel in Pittsfield from 1963 to 1971.
He was a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners’ clubs.
Following his retirement, he moved to Cape Cod, where he enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting, working and the outdoors.
He and his wife were married March 20, 1943, in St. Charles’ Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Eleanore Bercury of Pittsfield and Michele “Shelly†Stirling of Centerville; a son, Robert J. Brown of Pittsfield; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- George A. Brown, 86, died at Cape Cod Hospital on Sunday, May 11, 2003, surrounded by his family. A Mass commemorating his life will be held in the chapel of Christ the King Church in Mashpee on Friday, May 23, at 11. Interment will be Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, at a later date.
There will be no calling hours. He was predeceased by a sister, Isabelle Hutchinson, and a brother, Kenneth Brown. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mashpee Fire and Rescue, 20 Frank Hicks Drive, Mashpee, MA 02649. Arrangements are with DWYER FUNERAL HOME, 776 North St., Pittsfield.
