Phyllis H. Martin

Phyllis H. Martin, 82, a former Lenox resident, died Thursday evening at Richland Palmetto Hospital in Columbia, S.C.

She was the Lenox tax collector for 22 years, retiring in 1986.

Born in Pittsfield on Feb. 7, 1921, daughter of Henry P. and Lillian Ebert Hageman, she attended schools in Lenox and was a 1939 graduate of Lenox Memorial High School.

She also graduated from the former Berkshire Business College in Pittsfield.

She had resided in Columbia for five years.

Mrs. Martin was employed by accountant William E. Noonan in Lenox for several years.

She was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church and a member of its Rosary Altar Society. During her retirement years, she was a volunteer at the Silvio O. Conte National Archives and Records Administration in Pittsfield.

She enjoyed traveling.

Her husband, John D. Martin Sr., died July 14, 1969.

She leaves two sons, John D. Martin Jr. of New Harmony, Utah, and Richard T. Martin of Columbia, S.C.; a daughter, Gail E. Banks of Columbia, and two grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Phyllis H. Martin is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Jason Paul Martin and Matthew Charles Martin, both of Lenox; her son-in-law, David Banks; and daughter-in-law, Teresa Martin. She was predeceased, during the past six months, by her sisters, Shirley Cimini of Pittsfield in November 2002 and Genevieve O’Brien of Lenox, on Feb. 28, 2003.

The funeral will be Thursday, May 15, at 9:30 from ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Ann’s Church celebrated by the Rev. Gary M. Daily, pastor of St. Mary’s Church in Lee. Burial will follow in St. Ann’s Cemetery in Lenox. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 5 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests, those who wish may make memorial donations to the Silvio O. Conte National Archives in care of the funeral home, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240.
