MaryAnn Sawick

MaryAnn Sawick, 74, of Wappinger Falls, N.Y., formerly of Pittfield, died Tuesday at home.

Born in Pittsfield on Sept. 12, 1928, daughter of Clarence and Hilda Cox Hovey, she was a 1946 graduate of Pittsfield High School.

She had lived in Wappinger Falls for 43 years.

Mrs. Sawick retired as an inspector from IBM in East Fishkill, N.Y.

She was a past president of the Hopewell Kiwanis Club and a member of the Hughsonville Fire Company Ladies’ Auxiliary.

She volunteered with Walkway Over the Hudson and was involved with the Greer Children’s Home in Millbrook, N.Y., and Dutchess County (N.Y.) Youth Services Unit, especially with Legacy, the Lesbian and Gay Coalition of Youth.

Her husband, Nicholas M. Sawick Jr., whom she married April 24, 1948, died June 9, 1990.

She leaves a son, Michael Nicholas Sawick of Spring Valley, Calif.; a daughter, Jill Michelle Sawick of Dover Plains, N.Y.; two brothers, Thomas Hovey of Columbia, Mo., and Roy Hovey of Gilroy, Calif.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Another son, Shane Michael Sawick, died March 22, 1995, from AIDS-related complications.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for MaryAnn Hovey Sawick will be held Saturday at 1:30 at ROBERT H. AUCHMOODY FUNERAL HOME, 1028 Main St., Fishkill, N.Y. For those who desire, donations may be made to Mid-Hudson PFLAG, P.O. Box 880, Pleasant Valley, NY 12569, or Walkway Over the Hudson, 65 Gifford Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601, www.walkway.org.

She also leaves a daughter-in-law, Norma Sawick, her daughter’s life partner, Jackie McNeil, and four grandchildren, Victoria, Barbara, Michael and Amelia. She was a warm, kind-hearted woman who loved children and volunteered to be a mother to anyone who needed it.
