Thomas J. Reed

Thomas J. Reed, 56, of 255 Linden St. died Sunday at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield of complications from heart surgery.

Born in Boston on Oct. 20, 1946, son of Marguerite E. Mahoney Reed of Pittsfield and the late Daniel B. Reed, he moved with his parents to Pittsfield as a child and attended the St. Charles’ School and was a 1964 graduate of St. Joseph’s High School.

At the time of his death, Mr. Reed was employed by Haddad Rug Co. as plant manager. He had worked there for 35 years.

He also had worked part time at the Big Y supermarket.

He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church.

He was elected a member in 1967 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and had held every office of Pittsfield Lodge 272. He was exalted ruler from 1980-81, secretary for 18 years, West District deputy grand exalted ruler from 1988 to 1990, Officer of the Year in 1989 and Elk of the Year in 2000-01. That same year he was named the state’s Subordinate Lodge-Elk of the Year. He also served as secretary of the West District Past Exalted Rulers Association and West District, and was the veteran affairs representative to the VA Medical Center in Northampton.

In his earlier years, he was active with the slow-pitch softball league and played with the Big A Tire team, which won the city championship in 1974.

He and his wife, the former Diann M. Supranowicz, were married April 12, 1969, at St. Charles’ Church.

Besides his mother and his wife, he leaves a son, Eric J. Reed of Westfield; a daughter, Beth A. Reed of Pittsfield; his twin brother, Daniel M. Reed, and two other brothers, Michael B. Reed and Richard E. Reed, all of Pittsfield, and a grandson.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Thomas Reed, age 56, died May 4, 2003. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. Funeral services will be Thursday at 10:15 at the funeral home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 at Sacred Heart Church by the Rev. James K. Joyce, pastor.

Burial will take place at a later date. The family requests that memorial donations may be made to the Elks Scholarship Fund or to Sacred Heart Church in care of the funeral home. He was the proud Papa of Calvin, the son-in-law of Victor and Jeanne Supranowicz, the brother-in-law of Jane and Ann Reed, Susan Supranowicz and Ann May, the father-in-law of Heather Geisler-Reed. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
