Francis J. Pelkey

Francis J. Pelkey, 90, of 6 Main St. died Monday morning at home.

He operated Pittsfield’s first TV repair shop, Frank’s TV, from the 1940s until 1969.

Born in Utica, N.Y., on Jan. 7, 1913, son of Joseph and Mary Mae Hamlin Pelkey, he attended schools in Pittsfield and was a 1931 graduate of Pittsfield High School, the last class to graduate from the Central High School building on Second Street.

He played second base for the school baseball team and was the team manager in 1928 and 1929. He moved to Lenox in 1996.

Mr. Pelkey was shop manager for the former Brill Pocketbook Factory on Columbus Avenue until the late 1940s.

In the 1970s, he reopened his TV repair business, called Pelkey TV, from his home in Lebanon Springs, N.Y.

He enjoyed horse racing and was a New York Yankees fan.

His first wife, the former Mary Beaulieu, whom he married in May 1953, died in February 1954. His wife, the former Mary Marley, whom he married in November 1964, died in August 1996.

He leaves a son, Joel Pelkey of North Miami Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Mary “Dolly” O’Meara and Frances Fowler, both of Lenox; a brother, Joseph Pelkey of Pittsfield; two sisters, Ellen Ahlen and Mary Wolf, both of Pittsfield; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Another son, James Pelkey, died in June 1976, and a daughter, Patricia Murphy, died in May 1985.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A private graveside service for Francis J. Pelkey will be held Monday at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Pittsfield. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to may make donations in his memory to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240. He was also predeceased by a sister, Catherine McBurney.
