Joseph Edward Cancilla, 89, of Melbourne Place died Monday morning at Springside of Pittsfield.
Born in Isnello, province of Palermo, Sicily, on Oct. 24, 1913, son of Mariano and Angela Mazzola Cancilla, he was a graduate of Pittsfield High School.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Cancilla was a printer and later circulation manager with The Berkshire Eagle, retiring in 1976 after 39 years of service.
He was a communicant of St. Charles’ Church, where he also volunteered.
He enjoyed playing golf, gardening and doing crossword puzzles.
He and his wife, the former Marguerite Norton, were married May 20, 1944.
Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Joseph E. Cancilla Jr. of Stamford, Conn., Mark W. Cancilla of Newton and Christopher J. Cancilla of Kenmore, N.Y.; three daughters, Jane E. Simmons of Pittsfield, Barbara C. Feller of Fort Collins, Colo., and Maryann Cancilla-McCarthy of Seattle; three brothers, Dr. Michael L. Cancilla and Vincent W. Cancilla, both of Pittsfield, and Ernest Cancilla of Lancaster, S.C.; two sisters, Angela Cancilla and Domenica J. Carchedi, both of Pittsfield; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Joseph Edward Cancilla, who died Monday, April 21, 2003, will be held Friday, April 25, at 9:15 at DERY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 at St. Charles’ Church by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Thursday from 5 to 8 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the St. Charles’ Endowment Fund in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201. He was predeceased by four brothers, Giachino, Salvatore, Anthony and Natale Cancilla.
