Sara Jean Smith, 73, of 1-5 Rolling Hills died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.
Born in Jersey City, N.J., on April 25, 1929, daughter of Eckie and Mabel Chambers Watkins, she attended schools there and graduated from Snyder High School.
She received her bachelor of science degree in education from Jersey City State College and her master’s degree in education from the former North Adams State College. She moved to Hancock in 1969 and to Lenox in 1974.
Mrs. Smith was last employed as a math teacher and guidance counselor at the Berkshire Farm Center and Services for Youth in Canaan, N.Y.
Prior to that, she was a math teacher in the Jersey City Public Schools and a special education teacher at New Lebanon (N.Y.) Central High School.
She also was a licensed real estate broker.
She was a member of St. Helena’s Chapel, co-president of its women’s group, chairman of the Easter Chocolate Committee and a choir member.
She served on the boards of Hillcrest Educational Center and the former Hillcrest Hospital, and as a volunteer at the Lenox Food Pantry.
She enjoyed playing the organ.
She and her husband, John S. Smith, celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary March 9.
Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Craig S. Smith of Phoenix and John R. Smith of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a daughter, Jill A. Smith of Stoughton, and a grandson.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Mrs. Sara Jean Smith will be Thursday at 1 at St. Helena’s Chapel in Lenox . Burial will follow in Mountainview Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 5 to 8 at DERY FUNERAL HOME.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Women’s Group Memorial Garden at St. Helena’s in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield. Mrs. Smith was predeceased by two sisters, Louise Lyle and Shirley Barrow, and will be lovingly missed by her grandson, Jordan Patrick Fuller of Burnsville, Minn.
