Madeleine M. Basiliere, 86, of 109 Housatonic St., died Wednesday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Providence, R.I., on Dec. 24, 1916, daughter of John and Bridgette Coyle Betters, she attended schools in Rhode Island and was a 1935 graduate of East Providence High School. She came to the Berkshire area in 1939.
She and her husband, Alfred J. Basiliere, purchased the Hinsdale Country Club in 1954. In 1957 they built a new clubhouse and turned it into a dining and dancing facility. She retired from the family business in 1973.
Mrs. Basiliere was a communicant of St. Agnes’ Church in Dalton and a member of the former Franco American Club. After her retirement she lived in Cocoa Beach, Fla., and traveled extensively. Her husband died on July 29, 1984.
She leaves a son, William J. Basiliere of Hinsdale; a daughter, Patricia A. Gazaw of Dalton; a sister, Marie Durocher of Cocoa Beach; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sons, James Basiliere, who died in 1956, and A. Joseph Basiliere, who died April 26, 1973.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Madeleine M. Basiliere, 86, died in Pittsfield on Wednesday, April 9, 2003. Funeral services will be Saturday, April 12, at 8 from the DWYER FUNERAL HOME, 776 North St., Pittsfield, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 in St. Agnes’ Church in Dalton, celebrated by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor of St. Charles’ Church in Pittsfield.
Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Hinsdale. Calling hours will be at the funeral home today from 4 to 7. If friends desire, donations in her memory may be made to the Hinsdale Ambulance Fund in care of the funeral home.
