William J. Nickum

William J. Nickum, 74, of 272 South Mountain Road died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in New Castle, Pa., on Feb. 19, 1929, son of Gibson W. and Sara Eve Nickum, he was a 1947 graduate of Mid-Castle High School.

He attended Grove City (Pa.) College, prior to entering the Air Force. He moved to Pittsfield in 1956. He served as a staff sergeant with Armed Forces Radio and was stationed in Newfoundland during the Korean War.

Mr. Nickum was employed by Read-Shaw Insurance Co., formerly William E. Bagg Realtors, from 1984 until retiring as vice president in 1998. He also had worked as a radio announcer in Indiana and was program director at radio station WBRK until joining Bagg Realtors.

He was an active member of Zion’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he was past president of the church council and a former chairman of the Memorial and Special Gifts Committee, and served as usher and lector. Active in community affairs, he was past president of the former Jaycee’s Club of Pittsfield, a past officer of the Pittsfield Rotary Club, a member of the Town Players, the local German-American and Thursday Evening clubs, the U.S. Croquet Association, the Lenox Croquet Club, the Air Force Sergeants Association and a member of the Great Trails Council, Boy Scouts of America.

He and his wife, the former Rebecca J. Clark, would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 20.

Besides his wife, he leaves four daughters, Nancy N. Bailey of Emmaus, Pa., Catherine Ann Tower of Monterey, Sara J. LaJoie of Stamford, Conn., and Bethany E. Tague of South West Harbor, Maine; three sons, David C. Nickum of Cheshire, Scott W. Nickum of Phoenix and Christopher W. Nickum of Coral Springs, Fla., and 13 grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for William J. Nickum will be Friday at 11 in Zion’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, First Street, with the Rev. Peter D. Boehringer, pastor, officiating.

Following cremation, burial will be in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 7 at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the American Heart Association in care of the funeral home.
