William R. Tietgens Sr., 63, of 40 Roland St. died yesterday morning at Berkshire Medical Center following a long illness.
Born in Pittsfield on Nov. 17, 1939, son of Herman C. Tietgens Sr. and Beatrice Burt Tietgens of Eustis, Fla., he was a 1957 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
He was a member of the Army National Guard as a specialist 5 in Headquarters Company, Second Battalion, 110th Armor, 26th Infantry Division.
Mr. Tietgens was employed as head of maintenance for Yankee Motor Lodge in Lenox for 20 years, until leaving in June because of illness.
Previously, he was owner and operator of Dunkin’ Donuts in Pittsfield and North Adams, and Molly’s Bakery, also in North Adams. He had also worked as a mechanic at the former Hellawell Cadillac Dealership in Pittsfield and was past owner of Laurel Hill Motel in Lee.
He was a communicant of St. Charles’ Church. He enjoyed gardening, carpentry, especially home improvement projects, and was an all-around fix-it man.
He and his wife, the former Judith Stanley, were married Oct. 18, 1958, in St. Joseph’s Church.
Besides his parents and his wife, he leaves two sons, William R. Tietgens Jr. of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Brian Tietgens of Lenox; a daughter, Dr. Sharon Theresa Tietgens of East Greenbush, N.Y.; a brother, Herman Tietgens Jr. of the state of Florida; three sisters, Beatrice Phelps, Diane Denvers and Patrice Finley, all of the state of Florida, and eight grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- William R. Tietgens Sr., age 63, died April 2, 2003. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. The funeral will be Saturday at 8:15 from the funeral home followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Charles’ Church celebrated by the Rev. Peter Gregory, pastor.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia Society of America in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
