Arthur E. Murphy Sr

Arthur E. Murphy Sr., 76, of 199 Tampa Ave. died Saturday morning at Berkshire Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born in Pittsfield on Jan. 26, 1927, son of James Murphy Sr. and Myrtle Smith Murphy, he attended local schools. He joined the Army at age 17 and served during World War II as a communications specialist in the Philippines.

Mr. Murphy was employed as a stacker in the winding department at GE in the power transformer department for 39 years, retiring in 1987. He was a communicant of St. Charles’ Church and a member of the board of directors for VFW Post 448 in Pittsfield. He was past senior state champion in the horseshoe division of the Massachusetts Senior Games.

He and his wife, the former Angelina Mangiardi, were married Aug. 30, 1951, in Immaculate Conception Church in New Lebanon, N.Y.

Besides his wife, of Pittsfield, he leaves three sons, Arthur Murphy Jr. and Michael Murphy, both of Pittsfield, and William Murphy of Falmouth; a daughter, Colleen Jakacky of Pittsfield; three brothers, Edward Murphy of Syracuse, N.Y., and John Murphy and Thomas Murphy, both of Pittsfield, and seven grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Arthur Murphy Sr., age 76, died March 29, 2003. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Keith and Brian Jakacky and Erica, Sean, Nathaniel, Meaghan and Allison Murphy, and his son-in-law, Paul Jakacky. He was predeceased by four brothers, James Murphy Jr., and Bernard, William and Raymond Murphy, and a sister, Mary Knight. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 4 to 7 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 9:15 from the funeral home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Charles’ Church celebrated by the Rev. Peter Gregory, pastor. Burial will be at a later date in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
