Hal E. Clevenger

Hal E. Clevenger, 80, of 30 Lebanon Ave. died Tuesday at Hillcrest Commons, where he had resided since October 2001.

Born in New York City on Jan. 19, 1923, son of Hal H. and Bertha H. Winn Clevenger, he was a graduate of Samuel Gompers High School there. An Army veteran of World War II, he was awarded the Bronze Star.

Mr. Clevenger was employed as a heavy equipment operator with Petricca Industries, SJ Groves Co. and Emerson Contractors, retiring in 1985. He also worked at the Pittsfield Boys' Club from 1958 to 1968. Prior to that, he had worked for a short time at the Elmvale Mill and as a heavy equipment operator with the Teamsters.

He was a member of Immanuel Community Church, where he did painting to restore the church, and was a member of the Married Couples Group. He was a life member of VFW Post 448 and a director and business manager of the former Cavaliers Drum Corps. He also was a member of Boy Scout Troop 44, serving as a committeeman and institutional representative.

He and his wife, the former Mary C. Weatherby, were married July 25, 1942.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, John G. Clevenger of Easthampton and Edward R. Clevenger of Pittsfield, five granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Hal E. Clevenger will be conducted Saturday at 1 at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield by the Rev. Angela Buchauer, pastor of Immanuel Community Church. Burial will be in Cemetery of the Evergreens in New Lebanon, N.Y., at a later date.

Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association, 11 Campus Lane, Easthampton, MA 01027.
