Donald Kirkpatrick

March 11, 2003

Donald Kirkpatrick, 88, of 39 Alden Ave. died Tuesday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Braintree on Oct. 1, 1914, son of Arthur W. and Maude Winthrop Lincoln Kirkpatrick, he was a 1933 graduate of Newton High School.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served for five years, first with the coast artillery, then for more than a year with the 78th Infantry Division in Europe. A Purple Heart recipient, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Mr. Kirkpatrick moved to Pittsfield in 1948 and was the owner of Kirk's Variety and Hobby Center until 1979. He then was employed in general services at Berkshire Bank and Trust, which became Fleet Bank, retiring in 1990.

He was an active member of First Church of Christ, Congregational, serving on its executive board, finance and property committees, and diaconate. He also sang in the choir. He volunteered with Berkshire United Way, where he was active in allocations, and was a member of the Western Massachusetts chapter of the Service Corps of Retired Executives, the American Legion and, for 75 years, of the Appalachian Mountain Club.

He and his wife, the former Theresa G. Menezes, would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary April 17.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, David L. Kirkpatrick of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; a daughter, Nancy E. Kirkpatrick of Pittsfield; a brother, Charles L. Kirkpatrick of New London, N.H., and a grandson.
